Green hydrogen and AI: How Lingen combines two megatopics

Berlin, 28 October 2024 - Artificial intelligence is one of the mega-topics for the future - also in Lingen. Membership of KI Park, a registered association from Berlin, is intended to raise the city's international profile. After all, AI is not the only relevant field of research in which Lingen wants to be a pioneer.

A beacon for Lingen as a centre of innovation.

The KI Park Lingen, which is to be built at the city's prestigious IT Campus project, will be nothing less than that. The foundation stone has now been laid. The city of Lingen will become a "satellite location" and at the same time a member of the Berlin-based KI Park, a registered association specialising in research fields related to artificial intelligence.

At a recent event at the Lingen IT Centre on Kaiserstrasse, the participants revealed what they expect from this collaboration.

200 members from eleven countries united in KI Park Berlin

The KI Park from the capital creates the conditions for the successful research and development of pioneering AI technologies. With this philosophy, the Berliners have been able to attract well-known companies to their organisation. The network has around 200 members from eleven nations, including major corporations such as Volkswagen, Schäffler and Deloitte - and now Krone too.

Participation from Emsland comes not only in the form of the town of Lingen, but also through the Lingen innovation network Cornexion. The network quickly got the town of Lingen and agricultural machinery manufacturer Krone interested in the project. Krone is planning to build a large research and development centre at the new IT Campus on the B214.

"This is an important step for our company," explains Goy-Hinrich Korn, Chief Digital Officer of the Krone Group. "Artificial intelligence is already playing a major role for the Krone Group in areas such as autonomous driving, automation and load compartment recognition."

Two megatopics in Lingen: Green hydrogen and AI

The city is delighted that two mega topics of the future could now be located in Lingen: Green hydrogen and AI. Lord Mayor Dieter Krone is proud to now have an international partner at his side, "with whom we can establish the key technology of artificial intelligence at the IT campus in Lingen." The aim is to attract further companies from the sector.

According to all those involved, the two topics complement each other perfectly. Lingen is on its way to becoming the largest hydrogen centre in Germany and could therefore become one of the most important energy locations in the country. Energy is also a key topic for AI, because: "AI is inconceivable without energy," explains Dieter Krone.

High energy consumption for AI

Every data query by an artificial intelligence system causes considerable energy consumption, explains Olly Salzmann, board member of the KI Park Berlin. The more AI is used, the more energy is required by data centres. One possible idea for Lingen is to supply data centres with green energy generated from hydrogen.

The city of Lingen has formulated an ambitious goal: to make Lingen internationally recognised as a business and energy location in connection with the megatopics of green hydrogen and artificial intelligence.

In the coming period, Cornexion will play a key role in the day-to-day work on AI in Lingen. Its managing partner Bastian Papen summarises the tasks ahead:

"With the AI Park, we are connecting the region and Lingen to a strong, international AI network that has set itself the goal of actually putting AI into practice."

This work begins now.
